How artists advertise their music

There are many ways artists advertise their albums, these can include; posters, billboards, TV adverts and even through social media apps.

Billboards
According to a recent study about billboard advertising that was published in 2009, billboard advertising was found to be effective on drivers. ... 37% report looking at an outdoor ad each or most of the time they pass one. This therefore suggests that billboards are an effective marketing method as people take notice of them both consciously and sub-consiouscly whilst driving or even just being outside and passing one of them. There large size plays a huge part in their marketing effectiveness. most include the title of the album, the name of the artists,, the release date, a photo of the artist and where to buy/stream the album.

A fairly obvious poster if your a drake fan, this poster is very simple, its set on a black background , with white font and includes drakes signature logo.

Posters

The poster is also a very effective advertising technique in order for artists to promote the upcoming release of the album. The posters are usually very similar to the billboards as they have the name of the artists, the title of the album, the release date of the album, and a photo/background photo of the artist. The posters may also include the record label logo and some sort of credits. The posters are usually very creative and unique in order to catch the audience attention and raise the attention of their album.

TV Adverts

Tv adverts are very effective techniques of promoting many things including upcoming albums. According to an article published in 2013, Globally more than 1.4 billion households now own at least one television which is 79% of all households in first world countries and 42% in developing countries. These stats show us that TV adverts are essential to maximise publicity and promotion of an upcoming album, people only have to sub-counciously see something before it becomes engrossed into their everyday lifestyle such as potentially streaming the new album they saw on TV.  TV adverts are so important as they reach such a large amount of people every time they are shown. Most adverts for upcoming albums will include snippets of the main song of the album (which is usually released prior, as a single) as they know the audience is more likely to be attracted that way.

Here we see the advert that was recently on TV promoting Bruno Mars new album '24K Magic' the song playing in the background is the hit single off the album which is infect the name of the album '24K Magic', during this advert we also see very positive reviews from companies like the 'Rolling Stones magazine' in the final shot we see that we can steam the album on spotify.

Digi Pack Inspiration: Album Covers

Album Cover

2PAC PART 1: THUG
This Digi Pack is a very effective marketing technique because of the dark colours used. This Album by 2Pac only contains dark colours such as blacks and browns. Thug is a posthumously released compilation album consisting mostly of songs released before his death therefore i believe the dark colours used represent the mood of the album and portray a deeper emotional meaning to the tracks. Dark colours such as Black are often associated with death such as at funerals this is why these colours were used. Other then the colours there are not many pictures, in fact there are only two main photos. One on the front cover which is very plain showing 2Pac facing away from the camera with his hands behind his heads , the second being on the back cover which again shows a plain image on Pac with his hands behind his back and him bowing his head, once again representing the mood of the album and perhaps even representing how people in the music game feel about his death

TINIE TEMPAH: DISC-OVERY

I took inspiration from this Album Cover because the album by Tinie Tempah fits the same genre of my song, UK grime/ Hip-Hop. The album sold over 750,000 copies in the Uk alone since its release. Disc-Overy entered number the UK Album Chart at number one, selling 85,000 copies in its first week therefore I believe its a good album to take inspiration from, not just musically but also in terms of design and marketing of the album. The design of the digi pack is a very simple one, something I want to try and replicate. The Front cover uses a very futuristic looking photo of Tinie, I believe he's used a photo like this in order to represent the mood and space like atmosphere of the album. furthermore to back up this theory, some examples of song from this album include 'Wonderman', 'Written in the stars' and ' invincible'. The Dark colours have inspire me when thinking what use in creating my digi pack. I want to use dull/blunt colours and effects rather than bright colours because from my researcher I believe this has more of an effective marketing technique and helps represent the mood of the album best.

N-DUBZ: LOVE. LIVE. LIFE

This album y the Uk group N-Dubz is very similar to the  other UK album by Tinie Tempah I researched, again the genre matches that of my song, UK Grime/ hip-hop. Again this digi pack has uses dark colours, the only bright colour is a purple lighting in the background.  It uses a photo of the group on the front and one on the inside, showing off their unique dress sense. Like 2Pacs album this dig pack includes a acknowledgement by each three of the artists where they mention a thank you to all those involved in the production of the album and also the fans who have supported them. I think the 3D font used for the name of the group on the digi pack is a very effective marketing technique because the heading stands out and catches the audiences eye making them more likely to pick up the album and as a result purchase it.

KANYE WEST: 808S & HEARTBREAK

This digi pack is very different to the others I researched, The album by Kanye West has a very simple design and colour plan. There are only two pictures/ images on the whole digi pack. The first being on the front cover which shows a very simple design of a heart, the next is inside which shows kanye in a suit with an arry of colours spreading from his heart badge. these colours are the only real colours throughout the whole digi pack which is set on a blue back ground. I believe the simplicity of this digi pack is a very effective marketing technique because for me as the consumer it makes me want to listen to the songs and also see what else is in the Digi pack. The colours and simple desigh also represent the mood of the album which is quite calm and warm, although this is contradictory to the title of the album. Like most digi packs it includes a lyrics sheet, however something that is quite an effective marketing technique that rarely occurs is a poster of Kanye west , the artist, as shown above

My main actor

Main Actor

Name: Marcel Efueye

Age: 17

Height: 5"7

Bio:  Marcel Efueye has a wide array of talents, he is a keen sportsman at school, featuring in the first eleven for football and hockey. Marcel also occasionally releases music on the streaming site SoundCloud, His music fits in to the UK Grime/Rap genre. Furthermore, he is a very experienced drummer and piano player and I therefore believe he was the best person to be in my music videos because he has a background in music meaning he understands my visions and would generally be better at the miming aspect. To further back my choice of candidate, the songs he's released also fits the Grime/Rap/Hip-hop genre my song Don't Go fits in to.

Storyboard

Initially, For the opening scenes whilst Josh Kumra sings his first verse I want to use famous London shots and still shots of marcel with a scenic London background. When the first verse by Wretch starts, I want to show different shots of Marcel lip syncing, such as on Millennium bridge, in front of graffiti, by a traditional London dock and also in side a tunnel. I have decided to use these Location as I believe it shows the urban side of London. The next box in my storyboard shows my ideas for the hook, I want to film Marcel walking away from the camera on Millennium bridge with St Pauls Cathedral in the background. I feel Marcel walking away from the camera is very effective at portraying the Meaning and also the title of the song into the actual video, The final boxx above is very similar to the second box, again including scenic Marcel lip-syncing in front of London shots, showing the urban side.

For the Penultimate and Final Hook ( which is followed straight after) I want to keep it similar to the shot I filmed for the first verse by Josh Kumra, Marcel walking away from the camera, however I want to use two separate locations for each of the last two Verses. I want to shoot one of marcel walking away in a tunnel, because I believe its very effective at representing the atmosphere snd meaning of the song and then finally, the last verse I will film Marcel walking away in a busy crowd, hopefully the further away he walks the more he becomes blurred in with the rest of the crowd.

Edits I Made To The Song

I made some slight edits to the Original song in order for it to better fit my vision. The original song was far too slow and was around 4 minutes therefore i decided to speed it up and take away/ cut some of the verses from the original. Below are some of the screenshots that I took whilst editing

Updated lyrics after editing

I don't know where you come from,
But you're everywhere I go.
I don't know why you chose me (why me?)
But as long as your here, I don't need to know.

So don't go

Yeah, when I got introduced to you,
I knew I'd be true to you,
Everyone wanted a piece, you whispered to me sweet guys like me you love.
And I feel it in my soul,
It's like you're always with me on the road.
Phone in my hand while I listen to you moan,
And everybody in the car wants to try and get involved,
Yeah, then you make a silly tone,
Puppy love now, like give a dog a bone,
Shut me how I can breathe when I'm a frown
Our loves concrete
We should lead a setting stone

Yeah and when ever I'm in doubt,
You forever calm me down
And sometimes I'm a dummy and I know I would of crashed if you never was around

So don't go,
Don't leave,
Please stay,
With me,
You are, the only thing, I need to get by,
Get by.

Yeah I spend a little change on you,
But you always give it back.
Cos' I know you ain't here for the money,
You just wanna see me be the man
So I earnt my respect like a true gentleman,
All rumours where capital E relevant.
We should get three two emblems,
i give my life to you that's a street settlement.

Yeah, I'm feeling ever so emotional,
Cos I never had nothing when approaching you,
Sitting with a straight face on a poker man,
That's why a song like this has been over due,
Due over time,
Time over,

Love drunk you and I would die sober.
I'm in this for forever and a day
That's why wherever I go, they've got to put you on a plane

So don't go,
Don't leave,
Please Stay,
With me,
You are the only thing I need, to get by
To get by

So don't go,
Don't leave,
Please stay,
With me,
You are the only thing I need, to get by
To get by.

Costume, Props and equipment I Need

Costume, Props and Equipment I Need For My Music Video

In preparation for my music video I decided to create a list of props and costumes ( types of clothes/ styles) I need in order to allow me to be organised and have everything I need when it comes to the start of filming. Hopefully this will mean my music video will be the best it possibly can.

Props/Equipment:
  • Tripod
  • Cannon EOS
  • Zoomed lense
  • Lyric sheets
Costume:

  • Chains/jewellery for Marcel to wear ( to give the video a urban/street theme)
  • Different urban jumpers/coats/T-Shirt perhaps even tracksuits e.g. nike, this is because a tracksuit is usually the stereotypical dress sense for urban/street youths.
  • Rucksack ( style purpose only)
  • Different Shoes

  • Below are some examples of clothing and accessories I hope to use during filming:

    Urban American Music

I decided to look at some urban american music videos in order to give me some inspiration and allow me to compare ideas for my music video. It also allows me to hopefully another dimension to music video.

    The Game ft Drake-100

This is one of my favourite music videos because not only is it very simple but it is also a very urban american video. Its set in only a couple of locations which are all very street-like and show the hoods/run down parts of America.

    N.W.A- Straight Outta Compton

Another classic music video and also a very street related video. Its a very iconic song and video and changed the rap/ hip-hop. Filmed in the hoods of Compton, i really took inspiration from the music video because i believe it shows its audience a different side of the country something i want to try and do.

Eminem & Dr. Dre-Forgot About Dre

Certain shots which include Dr.Dre and Eminem under bridges and on the street inspired me to make a very urban street based music video.
