What is a Music Video?

What is a music video?

music video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recording. Although the origins of the music video date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around them.

Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming and non narrative approaches . Due to the popularity of music videos, many are now made into collections and sold on DVD. instead of watching the video to listen to the music, some viewers now watch them purely for their aesthetic value. Critics say in the modern day, music managers have sought to focus on sex appeal in music videos, particular in the case of female artists, rather than creating different narrative videos.

Types of music videos:

Illustrative: This type of music videos tells a story and is often performance based. The type of music videos are typically about love or romance. D
isclosure used this technique in their newest album Caracal, where for each of their newly realised songs they would have a video which would unfold a story line but would end on a cliff hanger, until another song on their album came out which would carry on this story line, encouraging more people to watch the videos in curiosity, to what would happen next.

Amplification: This is where the director interprets a music video in their own way using creative ideas that they have.

Conceptual: This type of music video may not have anything to do with the lyrics of the song and are known to be very abstract. A prime example is Fat boy slim's  Weapon Of Choice
